IAMT FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IAMT?
IAMT is your backstage pass to Broadway.

IAMT is a two-year post-secondary conservatory in Washington Heights, NYC. Think of us as a trade school for working artists. Not college. Not a BFA program. Just intensive, industry-level training taught by Broadway performers who are still in the game. No academics. No degree. No fluff.

We prepare our students for real careers. Our classrooms feel like rehearsal rooms. Our faculty are working professionals. Our graduates are booking.
What’s the application process?
Auditioning in person? We're at PUA, Drewnifieds, Moonifieds, CAP, National Unifieds, and at our IAMT studios in Washington Heights, NYC.

Create your application. Fill out your profile. Submit two letters of recommendation. Done!

Can't make it to us? Apply online by submitting audition videos through our portal.

We've streamlined it because we know you're busy training.
Do students focus on one specific discipline?
No tracks here. We train storytellers, not specialists.

Acting, voice, and dance get equal time in your schedule. Film and TV training? That's for everyone too.

The industry isn’t focused on one-dimensional performers anymore. Neither are we.
What does training look like?
Training here feels like being in rehearsal - focused, alive, and collaborative.

You’ll spend about twenty hours a week in class: acting, voice, leveled dance, and film/TV work. Specialty classes include partnering, dialects, directing, voice over, and even personal finance.

We don’t just study the craft - we master it. Every class moves you closer to working as a professional artist.
How much dance training do you offer?
Eight to ten hours a week. Six dance styles.

Advanced dancers stay sharp and push higher. Movers and intermediates get focused, consistent training at their level to develop their skills and confidence.

If you can move, we’ll make sure you move better. Everyone improves and no one plateaus.
Who teaches at IAMT?
Broadway performers. Music directors. Directors. Producers. Choreographers. Dance Captains.

Broadway Credits include Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby, Water for Elephants, Kimberly Akimbo, Once Upon a Mattress, The Music Man, Jagged Little Pill, Hello Dolly, Dear Evan Hansen, The Who's Tommy, Here Lies Love, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Matilda, Rock of Ages and Dancing with the Stars .

They're not just former performers. They're current ones. They teach what they're doing right now.
What kind of industry exposure do students get?
We don't just train you. We connect you.

Casting director masterclasses. New Works programs. Pre-production projects. Private summer stock auditions. Invite-only calls. These aren't résumé lines - they're relationships. You'll learn how the business actually works while building the network that gets you hired.

Our graduates don't just understand the industry. They're already part of it.
What performance opportunities are available?
Plenty - and always evolving!

End-of-semester concerts. Student-directed shows (one to two per semester). New Works programs (one to two per semester). A MISCAST concert for second-years. At least one musical directed by a current professional director.

Performance isn't extra credit here - it's part of the work.
Do you have an industry showcase?
We don’t do a showcase. We do something better.

Every day in April, a new agent or talent manager comes through our doors. By the end of the month, every graduating student has auditioned more than 20 times - and built a real network in the process.

You’ve spent two years with us building relationships with casting directors, producers, directors, choreographers and other professionals. April is the chance to get signed and walk out the door not just with a professional network, but represented and ready to book.
What kind of work do your graduates book?
Broadway. National tours. Feature films. Television. Regional theatre. Cruise ships. Recording artist tours.

Our graduates are working across the industry - from SIX and The Outsiders to NBC shows and HBO movies.

They trained here. Now they’re center stage.
How many students do you admit, and what are class sizes?
We keep our training intimate and intentional.

Two classes. About fifty students each - one hundred total.

Each class is divided into four dance levels, and you’ll move through the day with your group. Smaller classes mean more feedback, more attention, and better growth.

Because at IAMT, every artist gets seen.
How much is tuition?
$15,000 per semester.

A limited number of scholarships between $500 and $5,000 are awarded based on talent and need. (Scholarships are per semester and automatically renew.)

It’s a real investment - and every hour of training proves why.
Is there dorm housing?
We don’t offer dorms - intentionally.

Every IAMT student finds an apartment in NYC. We connect you with realtors, current students, and alumni. We help you find roommates. You'll learn to live like a working artist - budgeting, commuting, and navigating the city while you're still in training.

By graduation, you already know how to live and work here - so the focus stays on your craft.
What's Washington Heights like?
Washington Heights is a true New York neighborhood - vibrant, welcoming, and full of character.

You’ll find larger apartments, lower rents, and a mix of families, medical professionals, and Broadway performers.

It’s where artists actually live - close enough to Times Square, yet far enough to feel like home.
Can I tour the school?
Absolutely.

We can't do drop-ins, but reach out when you're in NYC and we'll arrange a tour. You'll see our facilities, watch classes in action, and get a feel for the energy that defines IAMT.

If you're serious about training here, you should see where it happens.
